Are we designing drugs for disease or market

Every year many new drugs are marketed in pharmaceutical market promising better treatment and recovery. But rapid growth arises a question that these drugs really meet the needs or only make profit.

With increasing global pharmaceutical industries many companies run behind the profit and building position in market ignoring the true need and demand for medicine.

Drug design and development should be meant for preparing drug targeting disease to reduce suffering and saving lives. But many companies doesnot pay attention on drug development they sell already prepared formulation in market because research requires years of testing , clinical trials and regulations to ensure the drug safety and efficacy.

The reality of pharmaceutical companies is to make profit by selling the drugs for disease which is seen more common in population like diabetes and hypertension recives more attention as they give high return while rare disease are neglected due to limited market potential. Another issue is of mee-too drugs which are similar in structure with minor modifications which increases competition in market rather than treatment.

Pharmaceutical sucess should not be about how much drugs are sold but the number of lives saved.

What do you think drug should be treated as business or basic human right?

MBH/PS

Drugs should always be for bringing improvements in human lives, for treating diseases and saving lives. For survival of the pharmaceutical companies in the huge competition they count the number of sale. No matter what, the sole purpose of its use is fulfilled I guess.
