Adult Vaccination: The Missed Chapter of Immunization โ€” Where Pharm.D Professionals Bridge the Gap

With regard to vaccination, while it is often associated with the immunization of children, many of the vaccines are recommended, if not required, during adult life as a result of missed inoculations, fading immunity, lifestyle factors, underlying medical conditions, fatality, or work exposure to disease.

Within India, there is an array of adult vaccines in prescription form, yet there is a lack of awareness regarding who needs to be immunized, when, and why. This is an area wherein pharma D professionals can bridge the gap, educating, guiding, and even empowering adults towards an informed decision-making process in coordination with a physician.

Why Adult Vaccination Matters

  • Immunity from childhood vaccines may decline over time

  • Many adults missed vaccines during childhood

  • Rising cases of preventable adult infections

  • Increased risk due to:

    • Diabetes, asthma, cardiac disease

    • Pregnancy

    • Healthcare or public-facing jobs

    • International travel

When was the last time youโ€™ve checked your vaccine status?

Are adults aware that some vaccines can prevent lifesaving complications in later life?

Can pharmacists play a greater role in preventive healthcare?

True, vaccination in adults is rarely seen, wherein the lack of awareness seems to be the main issue. People rarely know about the existing vaccines and the need and benefits of taking that vaccine, but as a pharmacist, the main role will be educating people and spreading awareness about it
