Abu Dhabi has introduced a sweeping ban on outdoor advertising of junk food and sugary beverages as part of its “Healthy Living” initiative. The policy targets billboards, public screens, transport ads, and other high-visibility spaces to reduce constant exposure to unhealthy food marketing.
The move is rooted in a simple idea: what people see daily influences what they eat.
What the policy does:
-
Bans ads for foods high in fat, sugar, and salt in public spaces
-
Allows only nutritionally approved (healthier) products to be advertised
-
Applies to brands, retailers, and advertising agencies
-
Includes penalties for non-compliance
Why it matters:
-
Reduces impulse food choices driven by marketing
-
Limits children’s exposure to junk food advertising
-
Targets obesity, diabetes, and lifestyle diseases
This isn’t about restricting choice, it’s about reshaping the environment. Instead of telling people to “eat better,” Abu Dhabi is making unhealthy options less visible.
