Abu Dhabi Bans Junk Food Ads: A Shift Toward Preventive Health

Abu Dhabi has introduced a sweeping ban on outdoor advertising of junk food and sugary beverages as part of its “Healthy Living” initiative. The policy targets billboards, public screens, transport ads, and other high-visibility spaces to reduce constant exposure to unhealthy food marketing.

The move is rooted in a simple idea: what people see daily influences what they eat.

What the policy does:

  • Bans ads for foods high in fat, sugar, and salt in public spaces

  • Allows only nutritionally approved (healthier) products to be advertised

  • Applies to brands, retailers, and advertising agencies

  • Includes penalties for non-compliance

Why it matters:

  • Reduces impulse food choices driven by marketing

  • Limits children’s exposure to junk food advertising

  • Targets obesity, diabetes, and lifestyle diseases

This isn’t about restricting choice, it’s about reshaping the environment. Instead of telling people to “eat better,” Abu Dhabi is making unhealthy options less visible.

This is a great move. Issues like this need to be regulated from the core, especially since advertisements have such a strong influence on people’s lifestyles.

This is a great initiative and must be followed by other countries too. Over the past few years there’s an alarming increase in fastfood chains and Junk food stalls. The poor hygiene, lack of proper inspections in those restaurants, contamination, use of adulterated, expired and cheap ingredients is a major issue and raises serious public health risks.

This is very good initiative to reduce the consumption of junk foods.

This is a good initiative and plays a primary goal to reduce obesity and other health risk factors like diabetes.

A very good initiative. As today health risk like cardiovascular disease, diabetes, hypertension are increasing at an alarming rate even among young. And the major reason behind this lies in the packaged and junk food.
