A little salt goes a long way - too much goes the wrong way

WHO recommends less than 5g of salt consumption in a day for salts but Indians consume almost double that : 10-12g both in rural and urban areas.

This is a matter of high concern as salt is the reason for hypertension, heart disease, kidney problems that lead to many deaths annually.

Here are some tips to reduce salt intake -

  1. Taste before you add and gradually reduce salt in cooking
  2. Try to use natural flavor enhancers in food like garlic, lemon juice and herbs
  3. Be mindful and limit of pickle, papad, chutney and sauces - as the increase salt intake per meal
  4. Drink enough water as salty cravings increase with dehydration

What tastes good today shouldn’t cost your health tomorrow. Be mindful every pinch !

Yes. High salt consumption can be harmful for health. As it is one of the significant contributor to Hypertension, we have to be very careful about the amount we are using it in our food. These days low-sodium salts are also available in the market, so that can be used too few a times during our day-to-day cooking along with the regular salt for a good balance. Besides, as some vegetables are naturally salty, while cooking them, we can use less salt.
