Reports suggest that a large number of chemist shops across India may observe a shutdown on 20 May to protest against concerns related to the growing presence of online pharmacies and other industry-related challenges.
Many pharmacy professionals believe that this issue is not just about business competition, but also about:
• Patient safety
• Regulation of medicine dispensing
• Role of registered pharmacists
• Rational use of medicines
Supporters of the shutdown argue that improper regulation in medicine distribution can increase the risk of self-medication and misuse of drugs.
At the same time, digital healthcare and online access to medicines are also rapidly growing in today’s healthcare system.
The real question is:
How can we balance patient convenience, technology, and safe pharmacy practices together?
What are your thoughts on this nationwide shutdown and the future of pharmacy practice in India?
Healthcare profession is not limited to prescribing and dispensing the medicines. Patient’s counseling is one of the core part of this profession. Though online services are more convenient but it cannot replace the healthcare profession. This sector is about practice and interaction with the patients.
Online pharmacies would help certain group of patients, elderly people and individuals who are chronically ill. But its also important that follow certain strict rules like :
Dispensing medicines only after verifying prescription.
Restriction against online sale of narcotics and other habit forming drugs as they may lead to misuse or abuse.
Ensuring involvement of registered pharmacist in the dispensing process.
I have not used online pharmacies, but what I have learned is that without a valid prescription, the medicines are not dispatched to patients. They even arrange for doctors to give the prescription.
But another concern spreading among the public is that proper consultation is not happening before writing a prescription.
“I think balancing technology, patient convenience, and safe pharmacy practice is becoming one of the biggest challenges in modern healthcare. While online services improve accessibility and convenience, patient safety, proper prescription verification, and responsible dispensing should never be compromised. The discussion around this shutdown also highlights the need to protect both professional pharmacy practice and public health in the evolving healthcare system.”
