Your Brain Has a Night Shift; Don’t Interrupt It

Have you ever wondered why, after a good night’s sleep, you wake up feeling fresh and clear-headed?

It’s not just because your body has rested.

While you’re asleep, your brain starts one of its most important job i.e cleaning itself.

Scientists call this the glymphatic system, often described as the brain’s ‘cleaning’ or ‘waste removal’ system. It becomes much more active during deep sleep, helping wash away waste products that build up in the brain throughout the day.

Think of your brain like a busy city.

During the day, millions of brain cells are constantly working, creating waste as a normal part of their activity. At night, while you’re in deep sleep, the glymphatic system acts like a cleaning crew, flushing out this waste and preparing your brain for the next day.

When you regularly cut your sleep short or stay up late every night, this cleaning process may not work as efficiently.

Over time, poor sleep has been linked to problems such as difficulty concentrating, forgetfulness, mood changes, and reduced mental performance.   5. Stay physically active during the day.

The least we can do is give it enough time to clean itself while we sleep.

The term glymphatic combines “glial” (supportive brain cells called astrocytes) and “lymphatic.” The system works by allowing cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) to flow alongside arteries into the brain tissue, where it mixes with interstitial fluid. This fluid then collects waste products and exits along veins, ultimately draining into the body’s lymphatic system.
