What would you do if you kept smelling smoke…even if nothing was actually burning ?
It sounds strange but some people experience this little-known medical phenomenon called Phantosmia . It is a condition when brain perceives smells that are not really existing.
What makes this condition fascinating is that it is not always caused by the nose itself. Phantom smells can sometimes occur after viral infections, migraines, head injuries, severe stress or even after certain neurological conditions because the brain’s smell-processing pathways become disrupted. The smell lasts only for seconds in some, while in others it may persist for months.
Since smell is closely related to memory and emotion, these invisible odors can subtly affect appetite, sleep, concentration and daily life in ways people cannot easily understand.
The condition remains surprisingly under-discussed, partly because many patients struggle to explain symptoms that nobody else around them can sense.
It is a strange reminder that sometimes the brain can create experiences that feel completely real even when the outside world is totally different.
What other “invisible” symptoms do you think deserve more awareness in healthcare?
