Pre-diabetes means your blood sugar is higher than normal but not yet in the diabetes range. It is more like a warning that if not taken care of, you have chances of getting diabetes. A lot of people have diabetes due to genetic factors, but if managed properly during the pre-diabetes stage, it can be avoided. But, if left unaddressed, up to 70% of people with pre-diabetes will develop type 2 diabetes within a decade.
Early signs are subtle:
-
Constant tiredness or brain fog
-
Increased thirst or frequent urination
-
Unexpected weight changes or sometimes no symptoms at all
Thatβs why routine screening is key, especially if you have a family history, carry extra weight around the waist, or live a mostly sedentary lifestyle.
Proven steps to reverse it:
-
Move more.Aim for at least 150 minutes of brisk activity per week (a 30-minute walk, 5 days a week, counts).
-
Balance your plate: Prioritize whole grains, vegetables, lean proteins, and cut back on sugary drinks and ultra-processed snacks.
-
Maintain a healthy weight: Even a 5β7% loss of body weight can dramatically lower risk.
-
Sleep & stress:Quality sleep and regular stress-management (meditation, deep breathing) help regulate blood sugar.
Regular check-ups, small daily habits, and consistent movement can keep you from crossing into type 2 diabetes and may even return your blood sugar to normal.
