World No Tobacco Day 2026: Unmasking the Appeal of Nicotine Addiction

Observed every year on 31 May, World No Tobacco Day is a global awareness campaign led by the World Health Organization (WHO) to highlight the harmful effects of tobacco and nicotine use and encourage healthier, tobacco-free lifestyles.

The World No Tobacco Day 2026 theme is "Unmasking the Appeal: Countering Nicotine and Tobacco Addiction."The campaign focuses on how tobacco and nicotine companies are using attractive flavours, colourful packaging, social media marketing, and new products such as e-cigarettes, vapes, nicotine pouches, and synthetic nicotine devices to attract young users.

According to WHO, millions of adolescents worldwide are already using tobacco and nicotine products, raising concerns about a new generation becoming addicted to nicotine. Many of these products are marketed as modern or safer alternatives, but they still carry significant health risks and can lead to long-term dependence.

The 2026 campaign aims to raise awareness about industry marketing tactics, support stronger regulations on nicotine products, restrict youth-targeted advertising and flavours, and promote access to effective tobacco cessation services.

Tobacco use remains a major cause of preventable diseases, including cancer, heart disease, stroke, respiratory illnesses, and oral health problems. However, quitting tobacco at any stage can significantly improve health and quality of life.

World No Tobacco Day serves as a reminder that protecting young people from nicotine addiction is a shared responsibility and an important step toward a healthier future

A powerful reminder—raising awareness about how nicotine products are marketed is crucial to protect the younger generation from hidden addiction risks.

Yes, I believe we are making progress, but there is still room for improvement. One positive example is the growing awareness of healthy lifestyle choices. I have helped one of my relative quit tobacco, which has improved his overall well-being and highlighted how important mental strength and self-care are in maintaining good health. While healthcare systems continue to advance technologically, equal attention should be given to mental health, stress management, and preventive care. True healthcare progress is achieved when we support both physical and mental well-being.

I had the opportunity to be part of a cross-sectional survey based on the Health Action Process Approach (HAPA) model for tobacco use and cessation. Through conducting the survey, I interacted with about 50 tobacco users, gaining valuable insights into their behaviors, motivations, and barriers to quitting. This experience also allowed me to counsel participants on tobacco cessation and promote healthier lifestyle choices.

People having habit of consuming tobacco are very rigid. It is difficult to change their mentality.Even though it costs them a life they are ready to take that risk but won’t stop eating tobacco.

Tobacco use is becoming a growing concern day by day. No matter how many awareness campaigns organizations run, many people still do not fully understand how harmful tobacco can be to their health. Everyone should be aware of its risks and also help spread awareness among others.

As a dentist, I have been dealing with tobacco users for the past 12 years. I always warn them that tobacco can cause oral lesions which may lead to cancer, and I strongly advise them to stop the habit, quit tobacco use, and support their recovery with appropriate supplements and care.
