COPD continues to affect millions worldwide, yet many people still remain unaware of its early signs, risk factors, and long-term impact.
As we mark World COPD Day, we’re reminded of the importance of awareness, timely diagnosis, and supportive care for those living with chronic respiratory conditions.
**What steps do you believe individuals and communities can take to promote better lung health?**
Absolute cure of COPD is unavailable as of now. But its symptoms can be well managed and thus its progression can be slowed down. Strictly avoid being present in smoke conditions and/or quit smoking by the people who smoke and suffering from COPD. Timely and proper medication can assist in easy breathing. Special exercise or yoga asanas for lungs and breathing process can also be opted. In severe cases, oxygen therapy or surgery might be required to deal with worse situation of COPD.
Community level steps include foremost, making people aware about healthy lungs and their importance. Smoking cessation or pulmonary rehabilitation are other important steps that can be undertaken at the community level by healthcare providers.
Air quality index these days has seen worse scores. Expecting a healthy air is so rare now. Forgetting to safe guard the nature in the name of modernization has become so common. Apart from personal habits such quitting smoking, a healthy environment is important for healthy lungs. So it is our collective responsibility to keep our surroundings clean and eco friendly. Change starts from you!
A truly important reminder. COPD often goes unnoticed until it’s advanced. What we need is accelerated public awareness campaigns, clean air policies, easily accessible lung screening, and intense training of more and more health care professionals on early detection and counselling. By integrating education, policies, and empathy, we can shift the narrative from COPD being a silent crisis to something that we actively prevent & manage.
