Why follow-ups don’t quite happen? Many patients consult doctor, receive treatment, get relieved but when asked for follow-ups, they simply accept that it’s not necessary. Despite being a crucial part of medical care, follow-ups are being neglected leading to incomplete treatment and poor health outcomes.
Patients visit nearby clinics or hospitals for treatment and when they get treated they assume the disease is cured. Most of the cases it does, but sometimes follow-ups is required to evaluate the treatment effectiveness. It’s crucial for Healthcare professionals to assess whether the patient is recovering, early identification of adverse drug reactions, and confirm whether the prescribed medication is effective enough or not.
Patients busy schedule, consultation fees, travelling expense and lack of prioritization and awareness of follow- ups are the major reason why this happens. This can lead to worsening of disease, incomplete diagnosis and under reporting of adverse drug reactions.
Improving follow-up adherence requires both patient awareness and better communication from healthcare providers. Even small efforts, such as clear instructions and reminders, can significantly improve health outcomes.
