Why nosebleeds(epistaxis) occur in children during summer?

Before few days my 7 year kid got nosebleed and I was worried, why?

During summer, high temperature and heat leads to dehydration and can cause cracking and tearing of tiny blood vessels located in nasal passage and ultimately nosebleeds.

As kids having vacations their outdoor activities increase, the cases are seen more in kids compared to adults.

While indoors, using fans on high speeds and air conditioners with extremely low temperatures can contribute to this by absorbing moisture.

Things to take care to prevent nosebleeds?

  • Maintain proper hydration of kids.
  • Maintaining proper humidity indoors.
  • Instructing kids not to touch or pinch nasal passage.
  • Use of 1-2 drops of saline rinse in nose to maintain moisture in nasal passages.

In most of the instances of nosebleeds, bleeding stops on its own within few minutes, applying pressure on nose using first finger and thumb and leaning forward can help to stop it.

In case, it lasts more than 2-5 minutes consult the doctor.
Also for frequently occurring nosebleeds, consult your doctor.

Informative and an important awareness that we are all in need of

Informative and nicely explained.

Yes. I have experienced these patients. I also have a patient of Raynauds syndrome who has epistaxis in summers.

Thanks for sharing this. It is indeed informative. :+1:

During childhood, my brother used to have nosebleeds especially during the summer. Hydration helped him.

Never experienced a nosebleed in my son. Very well explained.

I’ve also seen nosebleeds increase during summer, especially in children. Most cases are harmless and related to heat, dehydration, or dry air, but proper hydration and simple care can really help. Recurrent or prolonged bleeding should always be checked by a doctor.

Well explained!
