Why Everyone Needs to Know About Antibiotic Resistance

Antibiotic resistance is the ability of bacteria to survive and multiply after being exposed to antibiotics that are used to kill or weaken them. According to the WHO, antibiotic resistance is one of the major public health concerns of our time, and is often referred to as a silent pandemic.

What Causes Antibiotic Resistance

• Overprescribing of antibiotics
• Improper use of antibiotics
• Self-medication with antibiotics
• Substandard or poor-quality antibiotics
All of these contribute to bacteria becoming stronger than before by undergoing genetic changes, allowing them to survive and making them so called “superbugs.”

As a Result of These

• Even milder infections take longer to treat
• Increased hospital stays
• Increased medical and healthcare costs
• Increased surgical complications
• Increased spread of diseases

Measures That Need to Be Taken to Reduce Antibiotic Resistance

• Good hand hygiene practices
• Use of antibiotics only when prescribed
• Do not use someone else’s prescription
• Do not use leftover antibiotics
• Do not self-medicate
• Stay up to date with vaccinations

Conclusion
Antibiotic resistance is an urgent public health concern. If not properly addressed, it will continue to worsen. According to global health projections, antibiotic resistance could lead to millions of deaths annually by 2050.
The first and foremost step is to create awareness about antibiotic resistance and its consequences. Educate yourself and others about this concern because one step back can stop the continuation of its spread and break the chain.

What do you do with leftover antibiotics? Do you save them for next time?

Informative.
I usually try to complete my full course as prescribed. If anything is left, I don’t reuse it without a doctor’s advice.
But most people aren’t aware of antibiotics resistance and tend to reuse them later. To prevent this silent pandemic - awareness about antibiotic resistance is first and most important step.

Antibiotics now known to everyone so people have started self prescribing, and it is misused.

It can be reduced by taking following steps by everyone accordingly.

  1. Doctors should stop prescribing antibiotics for any trivial symptom where it can be avoided.
  2. Pharmacists should not give antibiotic medicines on older prescriptions or without prescriptions.
  3. And patients or receivers should never take it just casually as it might become hard to treat them in future in any diseases situation.
  4. Let’s bring awareness of long term side effects of use of unnecessary Antibiotics publically.

Awareness is the solution @Bansi

Right. @Varshapalani

I do not save leftover antibiotics for next time. Medicines should only be used when a doctor tells us to use them. If we keep and use them later, it can be unsafe and may not work properly. It is better to throw them away safely and always follow the doctor’s advice.
