When Internships Exploit, Not Educate

As students, we are often advised to do as many internships as possible to learn and gain experience. But, hidden within this promise of learning lies a harsh reality that many internships exploit students by using them only for tasks without guidance or teaching.

Many companies assign interns full-time employee hours with no pay or mentorships. This is absolute disrespect of students’ efforts. Most of the times, no proper tasks or learning goals are assigned. The doubts of students are often not addressed during internships which leaves students without clarity or growth.

Organizations should ensure that internships provide proper mentorship, clear learning outcomes and respect for students’ efforts. Along with this, students should also be careful in choosing opportunities that truly offers growth rather than workload .

Thus, an internship should be an opportunity to learn not a burden of labor.

Have you ever felt exploitation during an internship and how did you overcome it?

I completely agree with you; an internship is like training for a future opportunity.

You highlighted very important aspect @Anushree_Poojari2025 . Every internship should provide students with some practical knowledge. So that, it can be useful for students in their future job opportunities..

Very true. Internships are meant to educate not to exploit.

Well if we can learn something, then no harm, but if they exploit then it’s wrong..

True internships are all about learning not just exploiting.

Yes , during my internship I literally worked 10 hrs a day, 7 days a week for a few months. I felt exhausted and exploited to the core.
