When Career Comparisons Affect Your Mental Health

Well I think that comparison about achievements starts in India from a very delicate stage when we start comparing marks in school among children. Take it up a notch and we compare college grades which eventually leads to career comparisons. It is a never ending cycle and for it to end people must understand the concept of individuality.

In healthcare, comparisons feel unavoidable..they quietly burst confidence and happiness.. everyone’s journey are shaped by circumstances and timing as well and everything is valid. Thankyou for sharing this perspective.

Social Comparison yes of course driving many of us into despair in recent times to very large extent especially due to overuse of social media. It has affected the mental health across all age groups which is alarming. Support systems to help people come out of it is very essential.

Comparison can be healthy when it motivates growth, but it should never diminish self-worth. When others succeed, let is inspire learning rather than jealousy. Embracing an “I-can” attitude, with patience and self-comparison, helps us move forward steadily toward our own goals, in our own time.

So true. Comparing ourselves to others often hides how much progress we’ve already made. This was a gentle but important reminder—thanks!

Success is always seen as a blueprint, but it is subjective to everyone. I am a recent BDS graduate and in my internship I have often seen people saying they will follow the path what their senior followed when asked what to do next. But everyone is shaped differently due to one’s life experiences, company and family. And, our success too depends on it. By choosing a path of someone, we can’t steal the strength, passion and vision for that path from that person. So, choose your own path that aligns with you and create your own success story.

Comparison is an intrinsic instinct in humans. It should be done in a healthy way where it can motivate you,if it exceeds certain limits it can turn itself into despair which in return hinders your mental health.

Due to social media, we are increasingly aware of what’s happening in each other’s lives. At least we think we know, but social media is not a reflection of reality—many people fake how they feel and only show their perfect moments on social media. But life is not meant to be perfect.

Each individual’s path through life is unique, as is their ultimate destination; thus, it is futile to measure one’s own journey against another’s when the endpoints diverge entirely.

As a graduate, we feel very confused while choosing our career path. In my opinion, it is better to focus on path while getting confused with multiple options.

This really resonates. In healthcare, it’s easy to forget that everyone’s path is different. Constant comparison can drain motivation instead of inspiring growth. Focusing on personal progress and small wins feels much healthier than chasing someone else’s timeline.

Comparing ourselves to others comes naturally to us. This may occasionally inspire us to perform better, but more often than not, especially when social media only displays our best moments, it can cause us to feel anxious and self-conscious. This pressure can be even more intense in the healthcare industry because there are so many options and high standards. The hard work, failures, and sluggish progress that go on behind the scenes are hidden behind the carefully curated successes we typically see online. Additionally, there are many different types of careers in the healthcare industry, each with its own timetable and metrics for success, whether it be clinical work, research, administration, or teaching.

I totally agree with the point discussed, as it reflects a lot of youth who undergo this feeling very silently. It does hurt and harm our mental health over time, even though it won’t be visible at the start. From my personal experience, I used to be like this; it does hamper our own progress. Now, knowing about it, I prefer not to consume such reels in my feed. It does have a positive impact on me.

How easy it is to compare career but how difficult it is to realise how much efforts it takes to build one. Comparing them makes you question your own efforts and choices. It is important to introspect but more important is your peace and how once wise people said that comparison is the one way ticket to misery. And peace is the ultimate luxury.

As a student, I usually compare myself to others, often in academics. I believe it shows that I want to do better and improve. On the other hand, it is also harsh to compare ourselves, as it subsequently leads to self-doubt. We should always embrace our accomplishments and grow at our own pace.

We often compare our healthcare journey to others’ degrees, jobs, or timeline, forgetting every path is different. Constant comparison can quietly fuel stress and self-doubt. Your pace is valid. Your progress matters. Don’t measure your growth against other it hurts u bad than everything

I completely agree, these few months have been stressful making me question my decisions, making me think if I’m doing what I’m actually destined for.. being able to let myself know that everyone has their own path, their own journey makes it a little less exhausting and perhaps a little more breathable
