What My Internship Taught Me About Non-Clinical Careers Nobody Mentions in Dental School

Hi, I’m a dentist and an intern and honestly — dental school never once told me there were career options beyond the clinic.

I’m currently doing a probono internship with MedBound Hub for medical writing. I chose this because I’m personally exploring a transition into non-clinical roles. And this experience has already shown me things four years of dental school never did.

The work here — researching topics, writing content, simplifying medical information — still needs my dental knowledge. Just in a completely different way. And I genuinely didn’t expect to enjoy it as much as I do.

More dental graduates are now looking at roles like medical writing, clinical research, pharmacovigilance and healthcare content. Not because they gave up on dentistry — but because they realized their skills are useful in so many other places too.

What surprised me is that nobody in dental school ever had this conversation with us. No professor ever said — “your degree can take you beyond the chair.” I had to figure it out myself.

Maybe it’s time dental schools start talking about this more openly.

Absolutely, Ma’am, I am also enjoying the internship. We are learning new things everyday. It is great to know that different opportunities exist even for healthcare professionals beyond the clinical roles.
