The title might have surprised you as much as it did me when I read about this new study. So does that mean that we are still adolescents after crossing the age of 19 and are not adults anymore?
So, the neuroscientists at the University of Cambridge scanned the brains of 4000 people, aged from 0 to 90 years old.
- What they have found is very fascinating, is that even if adolescence starts at age 9, it stays till early 30’s.
- It was found in the research published in the journal ‘nature communications’, that our brains are constantly learning and adapting. but the graph of growth is not always smooth in the first half of our life.
- With the help of how water molecules through tissues of the brain, neural connections were mapped using MRI diffusion scans. eras of life were detected using this scans:
- childhood: from birth to age 9
- adolescence: from age 9 to 32
- adulthood: from age 32 to 66
- early ageing: from age 66 to 83
- late ageing: from age 83 onwards
According to one of the professors at Cambridge, this study will help us to understand our brain’s highs and lows, along with vulnerabilities at different stages of life. Understanding the sensitivity of the brain’s wiring to disruption and neurological diseases that are linked with it.
What do you think if this research study is going to help deal with mental health issues?
