What if AI could design a virus!!!

It sounds like science fiction but researchers at Stanford and the Arc Institute have taken a remarkable step toward making it real.

Scientists used Evo 1 and Evo 2, AI models trained to work with genetic sequences, to design completely new genomes for bacteriophages—viruses that infect bacteria.

And then came the surprising part:

The researchers tested AI-designed genomes in the laboratory and 16 of the new designs produced functional bacteriophages capable of infecting E. coli.

Why does this matter?

Because antibiotic resistance is making some bacterial infections increasingly difficult to treat. Bacteriophages already have the ability to specifically target bacteria and AI could potentially help researchers explore new phage designs much faster.

But this isn’t a new human virus. These viruses were designed to target bacteria, not people. The work is currently a proof of concept—not a ready-to-use treatment.

And there is an important question behind the excitement: If AI can help us design biological systems that don’t exist in nature, how do we make sure that this powerful technology is developed safely and responsibly?

AI-designed bacteriophages could open new possibilities in tackling antibiotic-resistant infections. At the same time, as AI becomes more capable of designing biological systems, strong safety measures and responsible research will be just as important as the scientific innovation itself.

Bacteriophages designed by AI can potentially be more specific towards the bacteria, and since they don’t target human cells, they can have little to no adverse reactions in comparison to broad-spectrum antibiotics.
