Visceral fat and bone health risks

A few months ago, one of my cousins started experiencing persistent leg pain at a surprisingly young age. Initially, everyone thought it was due to overwork or simple muscle strain.

However, after medical evaluation, doctors found something unexpected — bone degeneration near the hip socket caused by poor bone strength. Eventually, he had to undergo rod placement treatment for support.

One important observation doctors noticed was excessive abdominal fat deposition.

This reminded me of an important health concept:
“Fat distribution matters more than BMI.”
In simple terms, where fat is stored in the body can be more important than overall body weight when understanding health risks.

For example:
• Two people may have the same BMI(Body Mass Index).
• But one person may store more fat around the abdomen (visceral fat), while another stores fat mainly under the skin or around the hips and thighs.

The person with higher visceral abdominal fat may have a greater risk of weak bones with increase in fractures and chronic inflammation due to release of inflammatory chemicals.

BMI only reflects body weight relative to height. It does not show:
• Fat distribution
• Muscle mass
• Bone strength
• Internal fat around organs

Steps to better bone health

  1. Focusing on intake of protein and fiber rich, anti-inflammatory food like vegetables, fruits, whole grains, fish, nuts and legumes.
  2. Cutting down on refined carbs and sugar can help.
  3. Exercises for reducing visceral fat

In today’s modern era, protecting bone health is becoming more important as we age.

Yes, totally agree with you . Infact , in today’s era anything can happen to anyone . So we have to start taking care of ourself from very young age.

Exactly

Yes protecting bone health is very important, many young people come with fractures due to poor bone strength, need to educate them and make necessary measures to improve overall health

First of all thank you for sharing real life experience. Healthy eating and excercise are essential not only for weight loss, but also for protecting bones and overall health as we age.

That’s a really insightful observation. It clearly shows that health is not just about weight, but where and how the body stores fat. A strong reminder that focusing on overall lifestyle and internal health matters more than just numbers like BMI.

Great post highlighting Visceral Fat

As I am working on topic related to Type 2 diabetes for my master’s project , i came across the fact that fat surrounding internal organs (visceral fat) is more harmful as compared to fat distributed all over the body.

It majorly affect insulin sensitivity of the cells , it is more metabolically active and inflammatory releasing cytokines and other elements that interfere with insulin signaling.

That’s why more than BMI , Waist-Hip Ratio is a better predictor of metabolic and cardiovascular risk.

Same visceral fat causes inflammation that has osteoclastic activity (bone breakdown) leading to decline of bone health over time.

This is such an important point because many people still rely only on BMI to judge health. Fat distribution, especially visceral fat, can have serious effects on inflammation, metabolism, and even bone health. The connection between abdominal fat and bone degeneration is something that definitely deserves more awareness and preventive attention.

Very true! Awareness is must.

Very important information provided just here. Increased fat causing inflammatory response causing in turn bone damage.
