Unlearning and relearning in the real world of medicine

Stepping into the real world of medicine as a consultant taught me many life lessons. Each patient, each diagnosis, every treatment, and their results made me question most of my beliefs. I started unlearning and relearning a lot, especially the power of communication and patient care, which had a profound impact on my career.

Patient care:-

This is the core responsibility of the medical practitioner. Every patient should be treated with dignity and compassion, and respect for their privacy. Over time, I realised that patients talk not just about their illness but also about their fears, expectations, and their personal circumstances. It made me understand the weight of responsibility we carry and shifted my perspective from treating diseases to caring for people.

Communication:-

Every Healer should be a good listener. I realised that just being heard can have a healing effect, like a placebo. Empathetic communication helps you build trust with your patients. This helps to reduce their anxiety and brings out vital information that might otherwise be missed.

The Major Shift:-

Over time, I realized that treating a patient involves more than just curing their illness. It is also about reducing suffering in physical, emotional, and psychological ways.

Each patient is a different case, a different human being and hence, a different way to treat. So, what I believe is that in every case it’s unlearning and relearning everytime.

Very well written. After reading the book John Murtagh’s General Practice, I learnt this biopsychological art of clinical intuition.

By giving emotional support and motivating them, their mindset also shifts towards positive part by focusing on how to get better soon and also develops friendly relationship between patients and doctors.

This is so true. Sometimes working in the medical field , we get involved in diagnosis so much that we forget the human side of it. It is very important to be compassionate and be a good learner to our patients .
