Instead of asking whether a tradition is “right” or “wrong,” a better question is: What does science say about it?

Why Do Traditional Beliefs Exist?

Long before hospitals, laboratories, and modern medical technology, people depended on nature and experience to protect their health. They observed patterns, learned from mistakes, and developed customs that were easy for communities to follow. Over time, many of these practices became part of cultural and religious traditions.

Although the original scientific reason may have been forgotten, the tradition often remained.

When Science Supports Tradition

Interestingly, several traditional practices have scientific explanations.

For example, turmeric has been used for centuries in Indian households to treat minor cuts and skin problems. Modern research has shown that turmeric contains curcumin, a compound with anti-inflammatory and antioxidant properties.

Another example is washing hands before eating. While this is considered a cultural habit in many families, it is also one of the most effective ways to prevent the spread of infectious diseases.

Many traditional diets that include vegetables, whole grains, spices, and fermented foods also support good nutrition and gut health.

These examples remind us that some traditional practices were based on practical observations that science later helped explain.

When Science Challenges a Belief

Not every traditional belief is supported by scientific evidence. Some health claims continue to spread through word of mouth or social media without proper research.

For instance, claims that a particular tree releases cancer-causing chemicals only during a full moon or that certain rituals alone can cure serious diseases have not been supported by reliable scientific studies.

Accepting such claims without evidence can create unnecessary fear or even delay proper medical treatment.

This is why evidence-based medicine is essential. Medical recommendations should be supported by carefully conducted research rather than assumptions or rumors.

Conclusion

Traditional beliefs have shaped healthcare practices for centuries, and many continue to influence people’s daily lives. Some traditions have scientific support, while others remain cultural practices without strong medical evidence. Understanding the difference helps us respect our heritage while making decisions based on reliable research.

Not every traditional practice is a myth, and not every one is scientifically valid either. I think the real challenge is knowing which practices deserve to be preserved and which should evolve with new evidence

I personally think tradition and science don’t have to compete. When a practice is safe and supported by evidence it deserves to be appreciated. At the same time, we should be open to questioning beliefs that lack scientific support. Respecting our culture while embracing evidence-based medicine is the best way forward.
