Tooth autotransplantation is the movement of a tooth from one position in a patient’s mouth to another site in the same individual. Commonly, a premolar or wisdom tooth is used to replace a missing or non-restorable tooth.
This technique is especially useful in children and adolescents, where implants are not ideal due to ongoing jaw growth. Unlike implants, transplanted teeth retain the periodontal ligament, allowing proprioception, orthodontic movement, and natural bone preservation.
Success depends on proper case selection, atraumatic handling, and minimal extra oral time. When performed correctly, outcomes can rival those of dental implants.
Although technique-sensitive and not suitable for every patient, autotransplantation offers a biological, cost-effective solution that deserves more attention in modern dentistry.
Would you consider a patient’s own tooth as the best replacement when the conditions are right?
