The Organs We Still Can’t Engineer (Yet)

Bioengineers have successfully created lab-grown skin, tracheas, and even tiny liver organoids.
But some organs remain nearly impossible to replicate due to complex structure and function:

Lungs: intricate alveolar-capillary networks

Kidneys: filtration + hormonal control (e.g., EPO, renin)

Heart: requires synchronized electrical conduction and vascular supply
Bioprinting progress is promising but vascularization remains the main bottleneck.

Which organ would you prioritize for research funding and why?

I think engineering kidneys should be our first priority as it would be the most beneficial addition to medicine and medical progression in the years to come. Engineered kidneys could reduce the complications and difficulties of dialysis and can effectively reduce adverse reactions associated with kidney transplants or failure.
