The Most Surprising Thing I Learned About Teeth: They Remember

Few months ago, I went for treatment for the alignment of my teeth, and I was surprised to learn something fascinating: teeth can actually “remember” their previous position because of the surrounding periodontal ligament.

Before this, I only knew that teeth have DNA, blood supply, nerve supply, etc. — but this concept was completely new to me.

My dentist explained:“Teeth can remember their original position.”

That’s why retainers are so important after orthodontic treatment. Without them, teeth tend to shift back toward their earlier alignment due to something called orthodontic memory.

As a medical student, I genuinely didn’t know this before — and it made me wonder how many non-dental students know about it either.

Retainers are a crucial part of orthodontic treatment. Most cases relapse in their absence. Patients eventually feel disheartened when the results achieved after years of dental treatment go back to zero.
