The impact of deepbite on smiling

Deepbite is a type of malocclusion. As we bite or clench the teeth, there is a relation between upper and lower teeth. Generally, the lower teeth are visible by a few millimeters when we smile. But in deepbite, the upper teeth overlap the lower teeth by more than 4mm.

Causes:

  1. Genetics

  2. Smaller jaw or micrognathia

  3. Crowding of teeth

  4. Jaw injury

  5. Skeletal imbalance

Problems:

  1. Lower teeth are hardly visible, affecting smile and aesthetic look.

  2. Wear and tear of teeth.

  3. Sensitivity

  4. Gum problems like gingivitis

  5. Erosion of teeth

  6. Palatal injury

Treatment:

  1. Extraction of one or more teeth to adjust the space for the anteriors

  2. Braces to bring a good alignment.

  3. Retainers in case of minor adjustments.

  4. In cases where orthodontic treatment doesn’t prove effective, surgery may be done.

Well explained. Many people only seek correction for appearance, but deepbite can silently affect oral health over time. The connection between skeletal imbalance and smile aesthetics is written very well.

True. Orthodontic treatment is considered a cosmetic treatment by many, but malocclusion is the basic problem to be addressed. Overbite, deep bite, open bite — all these are to be made known to people so that the exact treatment can be done at the correct time interval.

A deepbite can subtly impair dental health and smile appearance in addition to concealing the lower teeth.

Early diagnosis, especially in growing children, can make treatment simpler and more effective. Timely orthodontic evaluation plays a key role.

Most people opt for orthodontic treatment only when teeth are misaligned. As the teeth in deepbite are mostly in proper alignment, it becomes difficult to make the parent/ patient understand that deep bite is also a malocclusion and requires treatment.
