What does “being a good doctor” really mean to you — clinical skill, communication, humanity, or all three?
Great topic!
Medbound Times has done an interesting piece on this.

I think all three. … without clinical skill obviously you can’t be a doctor even…if you have no good communication then patient will hesitate to tell their problems and if humanity is not in your nature then how will you understand the poor condition of patients.
Definitely all three
And one with good ethical values for the profession. And one who feels prode in what he/ she doing.
All three. A doctor should possess excellent clinical skills, ability to communicate and being empathetic are which makes them a good doctor.
Clinical Skill > Humanity > Communication skill (If I had to choose). All three are of utmost importance in making one a “good Doctor”
Being an ethical, politely communicating doctor with many clinical skills and good humanity.
Being a good doctor means combining clinical skill, communication, and humanity.
It involves accurate diagnosis and effective treatment.
Clear and empathetic communication with patients is essential.
Compassion and understanding are vital in patient care.
A good doctor treats patients as individuals with unique needs.
Holistic care addresses physical, emotional, and social aspects.
Balancing these elements is key to excellent medical practice.
all three and sanity added to it!!
It’s definitely all three. For me, a good doctor means having the smarts to heal, the kindness to truly listen, and the humanity to care deeply. It’s about combining head and heart.
All three and ofcourse one’s experience
Without experience no doctor can be called good doctor
Exactly! A truly good doctor blends clinical expertise with clear communication and genuine compassion—because healing comes not just from treatment, but from understanding and human connection.
A good doctor definitely needs to possess all three qualities. Unfortunately, in today’s world, some doctors tend to prioritise money over humanity. Empathy is essential, as it helps patients feel mentally calm, cared for, and relieved during their treatment.
For me, being a good doctor is a blend of all three — solid clinical skills, clear communication, and genuine humanity. Patients don’t just need treatment; they need understanding, reassurance, and respect.
Being a good doctor today goes beyond textbooks and treatment. It’s about integrating medical expertise with emotional intelligence. A good doctor listens, communicates clearly, respects diversity, acknowledges mental and emotional health, and supports patients holistically.
All 3 traits are important but unfortunately the condition of medical education is not very great. Personally, I needed someone during MBBS to teach me but it was considered ‘spoonfeeding’ and no heed was given to student’s learning requirements. We gave numerous exams and submitted numerous journals only to forget everything at the time of actual practice. The only hope for us is to repeatedly learn and practice while making a lot of mistakes with the fear of our seniors and consultants mocking and degrading us for being like that. God help us!
