The area extending from the corners of the mouth to the bridge of the nose is often called the danger triangle of the face. Infections here can spread to the cavernous sinus a critical venous structure inside the skull.
Why Is It Called Dangerous?
Veins in this region are valveless, allowing infections to travel backward through facial and angular veins into the cavernous sinus.
This pathway can allow bacteria from skin infections or dental infections to spread toward the brain.
What Is the Cavernous Sinus?
The cavernous sinus is a venous channel located at the base of the skull that surrounds vital structures including:
cranial nerves controlling eye movement
the internal carotid artery
venous drainage from the face and brain
Infection here can become life-threatening.
Common Risk Situations
• squeezing pimples near the nose or upper lip
• untreated dental infections
• nasal or sinus infections
• trauma or infected wounds
Warning Signs of Cavernous Sinus Involvement
Seek urgent medical care if symptoms include:
severe headache
swelling around the eyes
fever
double vision or eye movement difficulty
facial swelling or redness
Prevention Matters
avoid squeezing facial pimples
treat dental infections promptly
maintain facial hygiene
seek care for persistent swelling or infection
Small Area, Serious Risk
What appears to be a minor infection in this facial zone can have serious consequences if ignored.
Could a small pimple in the wrong place pose a serious threat to your health?
