While dental college may tech you how to treat caries, do complex and simple surgical procedures, enhance smiles and deal with anxious patients, no one tells you what it’s really like to run your own clinic.
Stepping into the real world, you realise dentistry isn’t just about dental treatment but about patient trust, financial discipline, rent and staff salaries.
Let’s talk about the business side of running a dental clinic:
- It’s more than just a dental chair:
Along with buying a dental chair and a space, there are hundreds of small details we miss out, like dental materials, instruments, autoclaves, tie ups with good dental labs and maintenance costs. Many young dentists lack persistence initially, and do not realise what it takes to keep things running in the long term.
Working as an associate for a while, even though it has a low pay initially, helps greatly. Watch how other clinics handle staff, manage patients and control expenses. These lessons help more than a degree. - Learn to track your money early:
You cannot manage what you don’t measure. Dentistry in India has daily running costs, and without tracking them, you’ll feel like the money is “just vanishing”
Use a financial tracking app or aa google sheet for tracking all your expenses.
Keep a separate bank account for your clinic and set aside a fixed amount to deposit at the end of each month, no matter how high the expenses were. If it was lower in a certain month, set aside less, but try to save as much as possible. This habit will teach you discipline and will help you grow your finances. - Do not undervalue yourself:
Many young dentists charge less to attract more patients. The truth is, when you undervalue your work, your patients will too.
Focus on work quality and experience initially, rather than the number of patients you treat. People ultimately are willing to pay for honesty, comfort and cleanliness. You have to be trustworthy. - Focus on building relationships:
Instagram reels are not the only way to go. A happy patient can help you alot more. A simple thank you or a follow up call after a complex procedure, remembering your patient’s name, all these small details will show you care. Your reputation is your biggest asset. - Go slow, and grow strong:
Always remember, Rome was not built in a day. Every successful clinic you see took years to build a patient base. Don’t rush, and focus on building skills. Learn new techniques and upgrade wisely. Learn about new technology and methods. Growth takes time, but it is worth every step.
Running a dental clinic is both, an art and a business. The more you respect the business side, the more freedom you will have to practice the way you want. Always remember, the patient’s positive impression about you is what matters most.
