The Amalgam exit : The move towards Mercury Free Dentistry

Silver fillings known as Dental Amalgam which has been used for over century was a go to solution for cavities. However the dental world is now officially breaking up with amalgam.

What is Amalgam

Amalgam is an alloy of mercury mixed with silver, tin, zinc and copper which has been used for its cost-effectiveness,durability,high strength.

Is Amalgam safe

It is generally safe for most people as the amount of mercury released is very low and is within safe limits

Why is the ban or the phase out

Amalgam has increasingly come under scrutiny following recommendations from the Minamata Convention on Mercury because of

  • environmental concern through improper disposal thereby bioaccumulation in fish risking wildlife and human
  • health concerns to pregnant women and children
  • patients with impaired neurological or renal function
  • Accidental spillage causing occupational exposure or when used under poor ventilation.

Is it banned in India
No,India has not implemented a nationwide ban however its actively moving towards phase -down as being a signatory to the convention.State level action in Punjab to ban the use and procurement on amalgam and mercury based equipments on
November 20,2025.

Why not India
• Because of the cheaper cost and accessability
• Sudden ban can cause limitation of treatment accessability for low income population thereby increasing the risk of health inequality.

India is likely to follow a phased transition by
• Stronger mercury waste regulations
• Increasing the use of alternative materials like- composite or ceramic

However now there is there is a global phase out target by 2034 .

Is it finally time to bid farewell to amalgam and prioritize sustainability over durability or can we achieve both. Will banning amalgam cause undiscovered challenges?

Well explained

With the recent composites having good strength properties, I think its time to stop the use of amalgam. Moreover the property of amalgam to contract and expand on exposure to cold and heat also causes micro cracks in the tooth in long run. Composites can definitely be better than amalgam.
