Not about taste buds but I was surprised to know that chilly or anything spicy is not a flavor but only burning sensation

Taste buds don’t work alone—they team up with olfactory system and touch and temperature receptors to create the full experience of flavor. That’s why food tastes bland when you have a cold!

One important interesting feature of taste bud is their rapid regeneration capacity.
It has an average life span of 8-10 days. So, cells over it recovered.

Taste buds are tiny but mighty, they help us enjoy flavors and even warn us about harmful substances. It’s fascinating how something so small can shape our entire eating experience and food memories!

But the taste sensations can be altered in various conditions like

Viral infections- flu and COVID -19
Head and neck injuries
Alzheimer’s
Parkinson’s disease
Diabetes
Hypothyroidism
Liver disease
Sjogrens syndrome etc…

Taste buds renew every 10–14 days and help detect not just flavor but also harmful substances. Some people are “supertasters” with extra sensitivity, and babies have taste buds even on their cheeks.
