Smiling Through Pregnancy: Managing Common Dental Challenges

Pregnancy brings about physiological and psychological changes in women. Hormonal fluctuations lead to various dental issues in females during pregnancy. Pregnancy-related dental conditions can occur as a result of hormonal changes, altered immunological responses, and changes in oral hygiene and food habits. Certain issues are:

  • Gingivitis — Decreased immune response, fluctuation in estrogen and progesterone levels, and changes in oral flora may lead to swelling and pain in the gums.
  • Periodontitis — Gingivitis, if untreated, may develop into periodontitis. Untreated periodontitis can result in tooth loss and gum infections. It has also been linked to negative pregnancy outcomes like preterm birth and low birth weight.
  • Tooth Erosion — Hyperemesis gravidarum (severe morning sickness) can induce tooth sensitivity and is frequently linked to problems like tooth erosion.
  • Xerostomia — Hormonal changes, stress, anxiety, medications, and dehydration may result in xerostomia.
  • Pyogenic Granuloma — Pyogenic granuloma during pregnancy (“pregnancy tumor”) is linked to hormonal changes combined with local irritation, such as plaque or calculus. Management is usually conservative — improving oral hygiene and removing local irritants.
  • Tooth Decay — Pregnant women are more prone to tooth decay due to an upturn in the acidic environment of the oral cavity, increased consumption of a sugary diet, and carelessness toward oral health. Recurrent vomiting increases the acidic environment of the oral cavity, resulting in demineralization of enamel.

Dental health during pregnancy is often overlooked, yet it plays a significant role in the wellbeing of both mother and child. With timely awareness, regular dental check-ups, and simple preventive measures, most pregnancy-related oral issues are entirely manageable. A collaborative approach between expectant mothers and dental professionals can go a long way in ensuring a healthy pregnancy and healthy smile.
