Shelf Life of Breastmilk - Freshness Preserved and Nourishment Delivered

Since it is the World Breastfeeding Week, let’s explore an important aspect of breastmilk - its shelf life.

Freshly Expressed Breastmilk

  • Room temperature (up to 77°F or 25°C): Breastmilk can be safely stored at room temperature for up to 4 hours, However, using it as soon as possible is recommended.
  • Refrigerator (40°F or 4°C or colder): Breastmilk can be safely stored in the refrigerator for up to 4 days.
  • Freezer (0°F or -18°C or colder): Freezing breastmilk allows for long storage, particularly for up to 12 months, but using it within 6 months is recommended for optimal quality.

Thawed Breastmilk

  • Refrigerator: Thawed breastmilk should be used within 24 hours.
  • Room Temperature: Once thawed breastmilk is brought to room temperature, it should be used within 2 hours.
  • Never refreeze the thawed breastmilk as it can lead to bacterial growth and could compromise its quality.

This is good information to take note of, especially for new mothers or individuals involved in baby nursing and other care related fields. I didn’t think breastmilk could be frozen for over a period of 6 months though!

Very nice to learn about storing up of breastmilk

But I would really suggest not to , it’s better fresh

In these growing world of working mothers storage for 1 or 2 days is ok but fir months keeping it is not what I would suggest

Well explained and thanks for sharing this valuable information. Many people don’t know about this.
