Screening and Prevention of Disease

This is one of the most simplest , but important aspect of Medicine. motive is to detect it and prevent it early.Preventive interventions include counseling about risk behaviors, vaccinations, medications, and, in some uncommon settings, surgery. Preventive services (including screening , tests, preventive interventions, and counseling) are different than other medical interventions as they are proactively administered to healthy individuals .

Principles of screening :-

  1. condition should be an important health problem
  2. should be treatment for the condition
  3. facilities for diagnosis and treatment should be available
  4. There should be latent stage of disease
  5. Should be a test or examination for the condition
  6. Test should be acceptable to population
  7. Natural history the disease should be adequately understood
  8. Agreed policy on whom to treat
  9. cost of finding the case should be balanced in relation to overall medicine expenditure.

Screening is done for: - breast cancer, cervical cancer, smoking related risk, effect of physical activity on health.

False positive result can come..so Verify the results by physician.

Summary:- screening and prevention of disease is more heard than known.So we need to have better and precise understanding so that we can treat for masses and solve the purpose of health care.

So what all other diseases can be screened and how to make it accessible to cure the disease before it advances.

Very important point, screening should routinely be done for various chronic diseases, such as diabetes or hypertension, which, when detected in the primary stages, are mostly reversible. Other than that, cancer and genetically predisposed diseases screening should routinely be carried out.
