Scalpel vs Stethoscope - How to choose your specialty?

Congratulations! You are finally a doctor- what’s next ? Do you remember those familiar words from all everyone you met ? Now it’s time to seriously think about the next big step- post graduation. You have the whole one year of internship to figure it out.

Here are a few pointers to think about-

  1. Interest- do you like to perform surgeries/ work in OPD and wards?

2 Skills- are you good at communication or have analytical & deductive skills?

3Lifestyle-would you like to handle emergencies/ night duties/long OT hours?

  1. Future- how do you see yourself after 10-15 years- private practice/ hospital/ research

Tip to remember-do all your clinical rotations seriously

The speciality you choose is a lifelong commitment- think with your heart & brain

How I chose my specialty?

—I want to perform surgeries & also check patients ; yet I don’t want to study for a super specialty branch

I don’t feel great about doing emergency duties or night duties.

I would like to have fixed hours for surgery & OPD , so I can have my personal life also

I would like to have my own private practice in future

Taking this points into consideration- I decided to take ophthalmology as my specialty.

What is your choice of speciality and why?
