Say Goodbye to Dental caries - A Groundbreaking Discovery: Regrowing tooth enamel.

Caries is the most common problem faced by human beings, and requires filling; if not treated at the right time, it may result in a root canal treatment or even extraction. Hence, caries should be addressed as early as possible.

Can you imagine a condition in which we can regrow enamel? It could be a ground-breaking discovery in the field of preventive dentistry. Enamel is the hardest and is the outermost layer of the tooth. If the enamel is demineralised, the inner dentin can be easily damaged, allowing caries to spread to the other layers as well.

According to a study published in Nature Communications, scientists have discovered a glycerol-stabilised calcium phosphate (CaP) gel capable of repairing enamel damage, thus mimicking the process of tooth mineralisation. This innovative mechanism, involving biomimicry, allows a nanoscale glycerol-stabilised calcium phosphate (CaP) coating to seamlessly bond with the enamel surface, effectively restoring its structure.

Although still under development, this technology holds immense promise. If successful, then it could revolutionise dental care. The patient shouldn’t have to undergo complex treatment; a less invasive and preventive approach is possible, thus improving the overall oral hygiene.

Key benefits

This discovery is truly exciting! The idea of regrowing enamel could completely change dentistry, shifting focus from reactive treatments like fillings or root canals to preventive, less invasive care. If this glycerol-stabilised CaP gel works in humans, it could protect teeth early, reduce sensitivity, and make dental care more accessible…a real game-changer for oral health.
