Role of Probiotics in oral health

Probiotics are beneficial microorganism that help maintain a healthy balance of oral microflora. In the oral cavity , they work by competing with pathogenic bacteria , reducing their growth and biofilm formation.

Research suggests that probiotics may help in reducing caries , gingivitis , periodontitis and halitosis by reducing levels of harmful bacteria such as streptococcus mutans . They also modulate the host immune response , reducing inflammation in periodontal tissues.

Probiotics can be delivered by lozenges , chewing gums , dairy products , or oral supplements . While evidence is promising , probiotics are considered an adjunct - not a replacement - for conventional oral hygiene practices and professional detal care.

This is a great reminder that oral health is about balance, not just elimination of bacteria The concept of supporting beneficial microbes is fascinating.

Probiotics are a helpful boost for oral health, but they work best alongside regular brushing, flossing, and dental check-ups—not as a substitute.
