Programmed Cell Revival(PCR): A discovery by scientists of CSIR-CCMB

Scientists at CSIR-Center for Cellular and Molecular Biology, Hyderabad discovered that cells posses innate capability to recover from near death. They call this phenomena " Programmed Cell Revival.

We have heard of programmed cell death. Which is a regulatory mechanism of body where a cell self destroys itself when its no longer needed. Now scientists from CSIR-CCMB have discovered where cells can also undergo programmed cell revival where they come back from a near death experience. I know it sounds weird. But this proves our body has so many hidden mechanisms which we are still unaware of.

What is meant by cell revival?

Cell revival is the mechanism by which, cells which were about to die can recover and regain the old functions as before.

How does it works?

Cells when exposed to sublethal concentration of lysosomotropic agents, recover through enhanced chromatin accessibility. Which works by activating genes related to embryonic development.

Cells tend to reconstruct organelles like mitochondria and lysosomes and forms a new mitochondrial-multivesucular structure which is associated with reactivation of metabolic processes. NF-κB signaling pathway is instrumental in cell revival and tissue regeneration.

Future prospects

  • It can be a breakthrough in regenerative medicine.
  • In mice this mechanism has shown repair of skin wounds and corneal burns. If proven successful in human it can help people with skin wound healing.
