Probiotics VS pancreatitis

Generally beneficial for the gut, probiotics help to increase gut health and provide a good metabolism.
While it is suggested to be beneficial, a theory makes it harmful during pancreatitis.

In cases of severe acute pancreatitis, it will prevent the reduction of bacteria, causing bacterial translocation. Some studies have reported higher mortality rates as compared to placebo groups related to this scenario.

:cyclone:**What do you think are other reasons and risk of probiotics in pancreatitis?? And are there any other diseases where we should avoid probiotics??**:cyclone:

Probiotics may worsen severe acute pancreatitis by increasing intestinal gas, leading to pressure and reduced blood flow. This can heighten the risk of infection and organ failure.
They should also be avoided in immunocompromised patients or those with critical illnesses, where probiotics may cause sepsis or systemic infections.

For patients with pancreatitis, probiotics may be beneficial in modulating gut flora and reducing inflammation.

They can reduce inflammation, boost immunity and modulate gut micro biota.

But they are not considered a medication and may not suit individuals.

My Medicine Professor stated this and I will quote him - “If you prescribe an infective diarrhea patient probiotics, The only thing it’s going to achieve is convincing me how incompetent you are. Probiotics have very limited indications and serve more as a marker of a doctor’s competence and knowledge”

Probiotics increase the risk of death in patients with severe acute pancreatitis.
Probiotics have been linked to bowel ischemia (reduced blood flow) in patients with acute pancreatitis, which can lead to fatal.
Causes inflammation due to increase in bacteria.
Other diseases where probiotic use should be avoided are:
Conditions with compromised immune systems,
Recent surgeries.
Severe illness.
Central venous catheter -blood stream infections.
