Pregnancy symptoms in dads-to-be: Demystifying Couvade syndrome

Did you know that while you are expecting a baby, your partner may also experience certain physical and emotional symptoms?

And this is not necessarily ‘all in the mind’! This phenomenon has been explored in scientific research and is called ‘Sympathetic pregnancy’ or ‘Couvade syndrome’.

What are the symptoms?

-Nausea, loss of appetite

-Dental pain

-Anxiety

-Heartburn

-Fatigue

-Back pain

These symptoms typically appear during the first trimester, subside or disappear during the second trimester, reappear with increased intensity during the third trimester and finally resolve shortly after delivery.

Why does it happen?

Early studies suggested that Couvade’s syndrome arises from a man’s anxiety about pregnancy, which contributes to the development of the somatic symptoms. This anxiety could result from feelings of alienation during pregnancy or the perception of the child as a rival for the partner’s attention.

Researchers have found altered hormonal activity in expectant fathers, particularly during the third trimester. There is an increase in cortisol, estradiol and prolactin and decreased levels of testosterone. These are potentially responsible for preparing men for fatherhood.

Key takeaway

It is noted that affected expectant fathers show increased attentiveness to their partner’s needs and help to facilitate communication with medical professionals. However, in some cases, it could lead to self-absorption and stress.

Thus, educating expectant fathers about the same will enable them to manage the symptoms and create a more harmonious environment.
