Did you know that postpartum hemorrhage is one of the leading causes of maternal deaths worldwide?
It occurs when a mother experiences heavy bleeding after childbirth often defined as blood loss of more than 500 ml within 24 hours of delivery.
Why it matters:
Can happen suddenly, even in women with no risk factors
Requires immediate recognition and treatment
Early management saves lives
Warning signs to watch for:
Excessive bleeding soaking pads within an hour
Dizziness, fainting, rapid heartbeat
Drop in blood pressure
Prevention & Response:
Active management of the third stage of labor
Training healthcare workers in emergency protocols
Access to uterotonics, blood products, and life-saving devices
Creating awareness about PPH is crucial timely recognition and care can prevent thousands of maternal deaths each year.
What more do you think can be done to improve awareness and timely management of PPH at community and hospital levels?
I think doctors and other health staffs should be extra careful with the postpartum women for a day or two and keep them in a ICU setting if required for monitoring of vitals.
Actually now a days this happened to most of the women and a new mom. But maternal death rate regarding this reason is very low. The gynecologist and the nurses are highly skilled and they give a best with us. They strictly monitor the mother upto 36hrs after delivery. Even during the check up they instruct us to maintain the factors as
1. Heamoglobin count
2. Blood pressure
3. Blood sugar
4. Albumin & Bilurubin and salt in urine
If we properly maintain our health then the maternal hemorrhage is easy to handle.
Few years back, when we used to visit movie theaters, a sequel of advertisements were being played to ban the usage of tobacco and cigarettes. To break the taboo about using sanitary napkins, a similar advertisement was made and played on those screens.
In the same way, to create awareness, and acknowledge a large number of population at the same time, advertisements running overbig screen can be very effective.
Community education programs and outreach campaigns can teach families and new mothers to recognize warning signs early and seek care immediately. At the hospital level, regular simulation drills, clear protocols, and ensuring ready access to essential medicines and blood products can significantly improve timely management of PPH.
Exactly. Early awareness through community education and strong hospital preparedness like drills, protocols, and access to supplies are key to managing PPH effectively and saving lives. @SwatiS
