Post-Intensive Care Syndrome (PICS) : The Challenges Beyond Recovery

What Is Post-Intensive Care Syndrome?

Post-Intensive Care Syndrome (PICS) is a collection of physical, cognitive and psychological problems that can persist after a patient is discharged from an intensive care unit (ICU). Although the critical illness may have been treated successfully, recovery often continues long after leaving the hospital.

Common Effects of PICS

Patients may experience muscle weakness, fatigue, difficulty performing daily activities, memory problems, reduced concentration, anxiety, depression or post-traumatic stress symptoms. These challenges can affect both the patient’s quality of life and their ability to return to work or normal routines.

Why Awareness Matters

Advances in critical care have increased survival rates, but greater attention is now being given to long-term recovery. Early rehabilitation, follow-up care and emotional support can help improve these outcomes. Understanding PICS is important because recovery from a critical illness does not always end when a patient leaves the ICU but it often marks the beginning of a new journey towards healing.

If surviving after a critical illness is considered a success, are we paying enough attention to the challenges patients face after leaving the ICU?
