Plants: More Than Greenery, Silent Healers and Protectors

Plants do much more than decorate our houses and surroundings. Plants heal in more ways than we notice such as fragrance, beautification and medicinal benefits. They heal, protect, purify and even influence our mood and environment in remarkable ways. I came to know this when I took a Snake Plant and placed it in a corner of my table. Watering it regularly and seeing it grow slowly and steadily. It kept me motivated to start the day.

Different Ways Plants Help Us:

:sparkles: Mosquito Repellent Plants:

The most common vectors are mosquitoes. It becomes crucial to repel them for our good health. We do use chemicals against them which are also harmful to humans. Some plants naturally release compounds that help repel insects. For example:

  • Citronella
  • Lavender
  • Tulsi (Holy Basil)

:sparkles: Oxygen-Enhancing Plants:

It is a common phenomenon of nature that plants absorb carbon dioxide and release oxygen. This is seen mostly daytime but at night, this is reversed, that is, it absorbs oxygen and releases carbon dioxide into the environment. Some plants help refresh indoor air all the time. Plants that can be planted for oxygen enhancement:

  • Snake Plant
  • Areca Palm
  • Money Plant

:sparkles: Natural Humidity Controllers*:*

Humidity is important for the human body as it helps regulate body temperature, protects and supports the respiratory tract and also affects skin and eye health. Plants release water vapor through transpiration, which helps balance indoor humidity. Plants for a humidity controller:

  • Peace Lily
  • Boston Fern
  • Spider Plant

:sparkles: Mood Booster and Stress-Relief Plants:

Green spaces and indoor plants are often linked with reduced stress and improved emotional well-being. For me, the Snake Plant worked as a bad mood buster.

  • Jasmine
  • Lavender Rosemary
  • Snake Plant

:sparkles: Natural Air Purifiers:

Certain plants can help improve indoor environmental quality. They help reduce indoor pollutants while creating fresher surroundings. Plants used as air purifiers:

  • Spider Plant
  • Peace Lily
  • Rubber Plant
