PharmD vs MBBS or PharmD + MBBS

PharmD is a six-year rigorous curriculum developed to help students attain knowledge and skills in physiology, along with pharmaceutical and medicinal sciences. This training enables them to build a bridge between medicine and pharmacotherapy, ultimately improving patient safety.

MBBS has long been an established medical degree. However, since the introduction of PharmD, it has often been compared to MBBS and sometimes even described as equivalent. This line of thinking weakens the very concept and purpose of the PharmD program. Both fields are not meant to compete but to complement each other within the healthcare system.

The physician diagnoses the disease and develops the therapeutic plan, while the PharmD professional works to optimize that therapy ensuring appropriate drug selection, correct dosing, monitoring for adverse effects, and improving overall medication safety for the patient.

Therefore, the conversation should not revolve around PharmD vs MBBS, but rather around PharmD with MBBS, a collaborative model where the roles of each professional are clearly defined, not overlapping, but effectively bridging the gap to deliver safer and more effective patient care.
