On This World Cancer Day - A Clinical Question for You All 🩺

Can Biopsies Spread Cancer?

While most doctors consider biopsies safe and essential for cancer diagnosis, some emerging research raises questions about whether certain techniques, especially core-needle biopsies, could carry a minimal risk of spreading tumor cells or triggering biological responses that may influence metastasis.

At the same time, less-invasive alternatives like advanced imaging and liquid biopsies are developing as options to evaluate cancer without directly puncturing the tumor.

Very nice topic of awareness. There are always some negative sides of the diagnostic tests . We should not imply everything to us. If we are implying negative, imply positive side also .. you will get to know the reality

More effective diagnostic methods will help in identifying cancer at an early stage. Such technologies should be made popularised and affordable to all.

very informative post!! Liquid biopsies detect cancer DNA or cells from blood without invasive procedures, making monitoring easier and safer than core needle biopsies. They complement rather than replace tissue biopsies and can be done often based on cancer type, treatment phase, and guidelines since they only need simple blood draws.

Whenever an invasive procedure such as a biopsy is performed, patients often become apprehensive, fearing that their condition may be severe. The post was highly informative, and I gained valuable insight about tumor seeding.

A meaningful way to mark World Cancer Day — clinical questions like this encourage reflection beyond awareness alone. They remind us of the importance of early detection, patient-centred care, and evidence-based decision-making in improving outcomes. Conversations that challenge thinking are just as valuable as campaigns in strengthening our approach to cancer care.

Biopsies remain essential; risks are minimal, benefits far outweigh concerns.

Most procedures have some kind of adverse effects. Considering risk: benefit ratio case by case the procedure would be advised. With regards to biopsy benefits clearly outweigh risks I feel. Currently liquid biopsies are also emerging for many cancers.

You are right. Even in earlier times this risk was persistent but people still didn’t get such risks on majority basis. We can take proper precautions. As cancer is not infectious disease but there are chances of other infections getting spread via blood biopsies.

Hence, a proper precaution with help of proper protective equipments, it can be of help. Spreading awareness about it is also necessary.
