New Study Reveals Women Gain More from Less Exercise — Here’s Why

I recently came across this new article published in Nature Cardiovascular Research has revealed striking sex-based differences in how physical activity protects the heart. According to data from over 85,000 adults in the UK Biobank, men may need nearly twice as much weekly exercise as women to achieve the same cardiovascular benefits.

:anatomical_heart:Key Findings

Researchers found that women who met the standard 150 minutes per week of moderate-to-vigorous activity had a 22% lower risk of coronary heart disease (CHD), compared to 17% in men. When women exercised for around 250 minutes weekly, their CHD risk dropped by 30% — but men needed over 530 minutes per week for similar protection.

Among those with existing heart disease, active women had a 70% lower mortality risk, compared to only 19% in men.

:microscope:Why the Difference?

Scientists suggest that estrogen may play a role, as it provides natural cardiovascular protection in women. Other factors like body composition, metabolism, and inflammatory response may also influence how exercise impacts each sex.

Despite gaining greater benefits, fewer women meet physical activity guidelines. Globally, women are 5% less active than men, with time constraints, caregiving responsibilities, and social norms often limiting exercise opportunities.

Interesting study! It highlights how women gain greater heart benefits from exercise, yet often face more barriers to staying active.
