New innovation- kidney disease patients survive without dialysis in the future

  1. Regenerative therapies based on cell: Main aim of this therapy is to repair the damaged kidneys by using the own cells in patients and the own cells in patients and helpful for stopping the dialysis.
  • Cell therapy: In this therapy the kidney cells are taken from the patient and again injected for boosting the kidney healing.

  • Treated For: Kidney disease caused due to the diabetes.

  • Stages in trial: The phase-II and III are ongoing.

  • Advantages: Kidney function improved. Dialysis is prevented for 18 months in the patients. This entire trial was performed in the countries like US, India and other countries. This trial was one of the most advanced in human trial that is currently undergoing.

  1. Therapy within stem cell: In this stem cell therapy mesenchymal cells are taken for repairing the kidney damage.
  • Stages in trial : Trails are going on preclinical.
  • Results shown in animals: Decreases inflammation, Improved in kidney filtering function, kidney tubules are repaired.
  1. Tiny kidneys: Scientists have been growing the tiny kidney structures in lab to work as real kidney function. In future this will help to replace the damaged parts of kidney.

  2. Repair cells: Muse cells are the repair cells that can migrate with natural process to repair injured organs. In the mice this muse cells have turned into the real kidney cells and improves function.

  3. A implantable device- Artificial kidney: This project has been developing by UCSF and vanderbilt university. A tiny implant that helps in filtering the natural kidney and the function of harmones.

  • Working procedure: The blood passes via the silicon membrane and also by live kidney cells with a device. Here the dialysis machine is not required.

  • Trail on pigs: The trail on pigs showed positive results without any infection. As the preclinical trial was passed successfully and the next step clinical trials going to start soon.

  • If the human trials were passed then this can replace the dialysis permanently.

    1. Genetic kidney diseases treated with gene therapy: By this therapy diseases like polycystic kidney disease, cystinosis are treated.
  • Working Procedure: The corrected genes delivers into the body by using a modified stem cells.

  • Trials: The company named Novartis is testing this gene therapy for the cystinosis.[DET383].

  • Aim: Main aim of this therapy is for the stoppage of the kidney failure and no need of the dialysis in the future.

  1. Future class of medications Anti necrotic drugs:
  • These drugs will help in the blocking of cell death and prevents from the kidney damage by getting worse.

  • Drugs are still in the development and helps in the stoppage from the acute kidney injury or else chronic kidney injury from the advance.

  • The above mentioned innovations are working for the future where the people suffering with the kidney failure avoid the dialysis by:

  • Restores the natural kidney function.

  • Kidney parts are replaced with the implants or by the regenerated with the implants or by the regenerated tissue.

  • Slows or reverses the disease progress.

Technology at its best!!!

Seeing all these innovations makes me feel so proud of the people behind all this.

Dialysis is such a painful procedure , I’ve seen people endure it with smile but deep down they want to die soon so they could be free of twice a week visit to hospital

If this innovation gets through, it would such a game changer like really , all the people out there will be able to live their life to the fullest!!!

@Drsuneeti-Yemberi yes its true.

@Nikita21 yes i agree with you and i too hope that this treatment will be affordable and reach to the many people because everyone cant afford the money for the treatment.

It’s a good innovation. Many people who survive on dialysis can feel relived.

@Neha87 yes you are right may people will relief from the dialysis by this innovation.

As this a advanced therapy can be very expensive in India It may nit be affordable by everyone .
Not every patient may respond the same way , effectiveness may vary and it may not work all type of kidney patients .
This kind of research are only available in big research hospitals or urban cities , people from rural areas might not get access easily .

This new innovation of dialysis without the kidney artificial prepared kidney which restores the natural kidney function

A significant number of kidney patients currently undergo dialysis on a daily, alternate-day, or weekly basis. Dialysis is a demanding procedure, often resulting in substantial fatigue. The prospect of dialysis can be daunting, with some patients expressing reluctance to initiate treatment due to the lifelong commitment it entails. The development of an alternative solution to dialysis would represent a significant advancement for those affected.

The potential for a dialysis-free treatment option is highly anticipated.
