Academic knowledge though important doesn’t open many doors beyond academics and gives limited exposure to opportunities like research and electives.

Thus, networking is important for:

  • access to guidance and mentorship
  • research and internship opportunities
  • letters of recommendations

To network effectively engage early and often and be genuine and respectful. Asking thoughtful questions and polite follow up can go a long way in networking.
