Myonuclear Permanence and Cellular Muscle Memory

When you engage in progressive resistance training, mechanical overload stimulates muscle satellite cells to donate their nuclei to growing muscle fibers (hypertrophy). This process, known as myonuclear accretion, expands the cellular machinery available to synthesize new protein. When you detrain or take time off, muscle fiber volume shrinks (atrophy), but research indicates these newly acquired myonuclei remain intact for extended periods, perhaps indefinitely. Because the transcriptional hubs are already built, retraining activates protein synthesis far faster than starting from scratch.
