Metformin Beyond Blood Sugar!

“Why Metformin Might Be the Most Underrated Drug in Medicine”
Here’s a draft post you could use or adapt:
:microscope: Did you know that Metformin can do more than just manage blood glucose?
Most of us are probably familiar with the role of Metformin in the management of Type 2 Diabetic Patients. What the medical community is discovering today is that the benefits of the drug go way beyond that.
Here are some findings that are changing the way we think about the drug:

  1. Cardiovascular Protection
The UKPDS trial already showed that the drug reduced the risk of Myocardial Infarction in overweight Type 2 Diabetic Patients by 39%. The benefits are seen independently of the drug’s effects on blood glucose.
  2. Anti-Cancer Properties
Some studies are showing that the drug can activate the AMPK enzyme, thereby inhibiting the Mammalian Target of Rapamycin (mTOR), a major driver of cancer growth. The anti-cancer effects are associated with reduced risk of colorectal, breast, and pancreatic cancers.
  3. Anti-Aging & Longevity
The TAME trial (Targeting Aging with Metformin) is currently being conducted to see if the drug can actually slow down the rate of biological aging. Yes, you read that right.4
  4. PCOS Management
Commonly used off-label for PCOS to enhance insulin sensitivity and induce ovulation.
    5. Renal Guidance Update
Traditionally taught to withhold Metformin when eGFR < 60. Now updated to state it’s safe to use when eGFR > 30 (with caution when eGFR 30-45).
  5. Quick Pearl: The most common cause for discontinuation of Metformin is GI side effects. Beginning patients on a low dose (500mg with meals) and titrating slowly will help minimize these issues.
