MASLD : The Growing Silent Epidemic

Metabolic dysfunction-associated steatotic liver disease (MASLD) formerly known as Non Alcoholic Fatty Liver Disease is emerging as a silent epidemic worldwide .It is a condition in which excessive fat builds up in the liver without excess alcohol consumption.

MADLD cases are rapidly increasing in India affecting nearly 40% of adults.

Most of the individuals are left undiagnosed during the early stages of the diasease, leading to long-term damage of the liver such as cirrhosis. Early symptoms like fatigue, bloating, abdominal discomfort are likely to be ignored by the individuals allowing the disease to progress further.

Individuals at higher risk include : Diabetes, Obesity, Hyperlipidemia patients.

Understanding MASLD :

Lifestyle modifications play an important role in managing fatty liver. Improving awareness in individuals regarding the early symptoms, food habits and daily lifestyle practices can help prevent disease progression and long-term complications.

Yes true. Educating patients on how everyday food choices impact liver pathophysiology is our best tool for early intervention. Dietary advice and structured exercise prescriptions need to become a core part of primary healthcare delivery.

This is a very important and relevant post. Many lifestyle-related diseases like MASLD are increasing because of unhealthy food habits, lack of exercise, stress, and sedentary lifestyles. The worrying part is that most people ignore early symptoms until complications develop.

Currently it is hard to say if the basic foods we consume under the organic tag are even organic or not. Rising health conditions are not only related to food habits and lifestyle but even what we are consuming by calling it healthy. Lifestyles can certainly influence disease rates but it is also important to understand if we are really consuming what we call healthy.

MASLD and many other lifestyle disease spread silently. Early education,screening , creating awareness and lifestyle modification plays a crucial role.
